Director of such films like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Windtalkers, and Mission: Impossible 2, John Woo is world renowned for his deliverance of top notch action and slow motion cut scenes. Supposedly, John Woo is to announce a new Metroid film at Comic Con this year. One image has been popping up over the Internet featuring Samus' helmet and the date, May 2, 2009. John Woo bought the rights to make a Metroid film back in 2004, but no other announcements have been made since. Latest Comments

cool
Okoa April 12, 2008, 12:47 PM
Hmmm....sounds risky to me. Considering how big of a Metroid fan I am, I'm skeptical.
Should be interesting, I suppose.
Santuli April 12, 2008, 12:53 PM
NO-'EFFIN-WAI!
Well...I didnt think a movie on Nintendo games would ever be made after....Super Mario Bros. *lightning* *black cat screeches* *mirror breaks*
I hope its not a disappointment either. Metroid is too amazing to be ruined this way. But I always thought of how damn cool it would be for a good metroid movie to be made.
lefthandedlink April 12, 2008, 12:53 PM
cool
CoOL?!?! This is like, OMG
Eddy "D_S" Fettig April 12, 2008, 01:16 PM
Definitely would be awesome. Has my support. Even if it's not amazing, I'd like to see someone TRY.
pokefan848 April 12, 2008, 01:22 PM
HOLY CRAP!!!!! YESSSSS!!!!!
Trondheim April 12, 2008, 01:25 PM
A bit skeptical about it, but it's something that I'd still like to see.
Santuli April 12, 2008, 02:28 PM
you're right Eddy. We'll never know what these things could be like until its tried!
And hey, if it ends up being good, then we might actually see a real Zelda movie
lefthandedlink April 12, 2008, 03:10 PM
Like i said before, a Zelda game is bound to happen soon. And even a Mario one. And a Mario movie doesn't even have to be real, it could be animated... I think that an animated Mario movie would be badass...
Oh yeah, about the movie. I wanna see if the woman's anatomy matches ZSS's XDXDXD
Borrie April 12, 2008, 03:33 PM
Before when I heard this, I thought a Metroid movie would not work out because of the situation of Samus. However After playing Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, It could work out, as long as they get the right dialog. Metroid Prime 3 showed that Metroid is capable of some very movie like qualities, and is more then capable of introducing a larger cast then just Samus on one planet. Not to mention the Ship at the end of MP3, and the announcements that there will not be a Metroid Prime 4. Super Smash Bros. Showed that Samus, without the Suit, is actually capable of having Dialog that fits the character and does not actually ruin her (Like how some things ruined Link and his voice).
Santuli April 12, 2008, 03:47 PM
Corruption is what makes me want to see a Metroid movie actually, so I agree with you Borrie
Samuel71 April 12, 2008, 04:08 PM
Like the majority of video game movies, it will probably be quite bad.
However, Metroid is a series which I think could work moderately well in a movie.
Santuli April 12, 2008, 05:02 PM
For the sake of Metroid's dignity, lets hope its at least decent. The Mario movie was pure crap anyways. It was barely Mario in the first place...
This one could be something special...hopefully
Okoa April 12, 2008, 05:08 PM
Now, if Paul W. Anderson were directing this, I wouldn't be so skeptical about it. I absolutely loved Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil (he directed them both), so if anyone knows how to make a video game movie, it's probably him. But this is John Woo, who brought us the action-packed Mission Impossible 2 and stuff. And since Metroid is more focused on exploration and atmosphere rather than action, I'm still not sure about it. But I'll definitely go see it anyways.
Komodo_Zero April 12, 2008, 05:10 PM
Seeing Woo's movies, I expect the action based malarky to be the primary focus. It could be worth watching out for, but it could also be a thing to ignore.
lefthandedlink April 12, 2008, 05:12 PM
I agree.
Like, I have never played Metroid (well, to the extent of BEATING it) but I know for sure that Metroid is more of a story-driven game series than an action game series.
Let's just hope it's like The Matrix, a movie that gives us freaking great lessons and at the same time, gives us action.
Let's just hope that the producer finds a good writer.
Komodo_Zero April 12, 2008, 05:15 PM

Wrong. The series has a back story, but only MP3 had a real focus to the plot. Previous games were all about the exploration.
Okoa April 12, 2008, 05:16 PM
And Metroid Fusion, too. Maybe it can be a sequel to Fusion. I wanna know what happens after that.
lefthandedlink April 12, 2008, 05:17 PM
Well, it IS the last game chronical-wise.
Komodo_Zero April 12, 2008, 05:20 PM
Woo should NOT be in charge of adding to the series.
He should only do what has been done, or make something up that can not under any curcumstance be placed in the series.
lefthandedlink April 12, 2008, 05:24 PM
Well, he might as well be the person who only supervises the action scenes.
Komodo_Zero April 12, 2008, 05:25 PM
He's the director, I'm fairly confident he's in charge of the whole thing.
Okoa April 12, 2008, 05:26 PM
Yeah, I wasn't really expecting a movie sequel to Fusion (honestly, I'm hoping that Metroid Dread will do that), but maybe it can be a remake of any of the existing Metroid games.
lefthandedlink April 12, 2008, 05:26 PM
He's the director, I'm fairly confident he's in charge of the whole thing.
Even so, writers have a huge impact.
Komodo_Zero April 12, 2008, 05:31 PM
Yes, they do.
But the directors have the final word, and can cut out any sections in a heartbeat.
Henrie April 12, 2008, 07:51 PM
I don't think we will ever see it, and maybe that's a good thing. Videogame based movies always stink!
Dr. Demento April 12, 2008, 08:00 PM
i've always been curious about a Metroid film... even if it is not good ... now... Zelda movie anyone?
Clucky The Cucco April 12, 2008, 08:48 PM
Looks pretty authentic. I don't think it will be that bad though. I wonder if it will be of an existing game or something totally new.
thelegendofmeh April 12, 2008, 09:08 PM
now... who would play Samus? ( i know this may not even be real but let's just guess)
Wind April 12, 2008, 10:42 PM
I usually tend to dislike movies made from video-games, but I guess someone had to do it.
"now... who would play Samus? ( i know this may not even be real but lets just guess)"
Keira knightley, duh... ; )
~[R]
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 08:07 AM
If anyone should play her it should at least be an official actress who has voiced her before, but the problem with that is that the two that have (Jennifer Hale and Alesia Gildewell) look nothing like what Samus does.
Solution = Animated movie Chances of that happening = slim
Santuli April 13, 2008, 09:15 AM
Agreed on everything K_Z said.
But actually, Keira Knightley isnt such a bad option. If her hair is done the same way Samus has it, then she could definitely look like her. And she's not bad at her job. And she has some experience with action-filled movies. PotC, huh?
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 10:02 AM
I don't know, I just have a feeling that Keira Knightley isn't the right actress for Samus...
lefthandedlink April 13, 2008, 11:59 AM
I agree...
To be honest, I think Angelina would play a great Samus.
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 12:02 PM
Lefty... you know nothing...
lefthandedlink April 13, 2008, 12:03 PM
I probably do know some things... just not everything.
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 12:05 PM
Yes, whatever. But having Angelina Jolie play Samus would be a terrible mistake.
lefthandedlink April 13, 2008, 12:06 PM
Kindly explain.
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 12:08 PM
Choosing Angelina Jolie as the actress for Samus would be the most obvious easy route out, when there are many more people (who I can not name, before you even try to snare me into a trap that I can't get out of) who are much more suiting for the role.
lefthandedlink April 13, 2008, 12:09 PM
Well, you're not even trying to bother explaining why Angelina Jolie would not be good, OR the fact that you can't name anyone else...
So whatever.
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 12:12 PM
Seriously, trust me on this one. Angelina Jolie would not be a good choice. Even if I cannot explain why, there is a deep nagging thought in my head that tells me that she will utterly ruin the series, not just the movie, but the series...
I don't want that...
lefthandedlink April 13, 2008, 12:13 PM
Alright. Fair enough of a reason...
Did you think she was good or bad in the Tomb Raider series?
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 12:19 PM
For Tomb Raider movies she was fine, she actually suited the role of Lara Croft.
hupla April 13, 2008, 01:19 PM
I would hope samus never goes out of her suit in the movie. Then we can have a comptent voice actress play her
Komodo_Zero April 13, 2008, 01:20 PM
I would hope samus never goes out of her suit in the movie.
Except for the ending. That way it would be Metroid tradition.
Santuli April 13, 2008, 02:08 PM
True. Or well, any part in which she isnt wearing her Power Suit, we could have her conviniently in situations were she doesnt need to speak...then anyone that looks like her could play the role ^_^
Or like K_Z said, not until the end.We could even end up with a "Samus is actually a girl!!!! O_O" situation at the end for those who dont even know what Metroid is.
Samuel71 April 13, 2008, 04:09 PM
We could even end up with a "Samus is actually a girl!!!! O_O" situation at the end for those who dont even know what Metroid is.
In that situation, Samus wouldn't be able to talk until the end of the movie... or else she'd have to have a manly voice, which would be really weird...

Suit voice synthesisers. Another problem that didn't need to to be solved, solved.

Yeah, I thought of that... but I don't know, it would kind of dehumanize Samus if she talked like a robot. I don't know if anyone would want to listen to a main protagonist like that for a whole movie.

How often does Samus talk anyway? Not much, pretty much Fusion and Brawl only to be exact (outside of monologues).
Santuli April 13, 2008, 06:02 PM
Oh...that's true. Silly of me to forget such things...
Well, Samus has talked much because she hasnt had much of a need for it. She was kept silent in the one game where she could have though: Corruption.
MRLN April 13, 2008, 06:38 PM
This is inexplicably odd...
It could be good, but as long as it stays too action-y, it won't fare well with the critics and the Metroid fans.
Lukar82394 April 13, 2008, 07:19 PM
I'd definitely go and see a Metroid movie atleast three times if they made one. That pic looks semi-real, semi-CG, so there's a possibility that the movie's ready to be announced.
Also, if anyone knows, where did this pic first show up at?
Henrie April 13, 2008, 07:25 PM
Jessica Alba, anyone? She's super hot!
Santuli April 13, 2008, 09:18 PM
It could be good, but as long as it stays too action-y, it won't fare well with the critics and the Metroid fans. Why? If half the movie features Samus backtracking through whatever the place in which the movie takes place, it would lose interest. It HAS to have the more action-driven part of Metroid. A game is one thing, but a movie where a character just explores or backtracks through previously visited places...eh... I think it should be more like Corruption in terms of action and interaction with other character (the GF NEEDS to be in the movie), but maybe, at the same time, in a more isolated setting than Corruption? I dont know... They probably would start with the origin of Samus though. How she grew up to be what she is now.
lefthandedlink April 14, 2008, 09:54 AM
Jessica Alba, no matter how hot she is, is a bad actress.
Henrie April 14, 2008, 07:45 PM
Well, maybe you are right but if John Woo decides that we will see Samus without the Helmet/suit he has to choose someone who looks like her. Jessica alba is the first that sprang to my mind. Jessica alba is very hot, and imagine her with a blond ponytail. She IS Samus!
However, If John Woo decides that she has to keep her Helmet/suit on he can choose a better actress, no matter what her looks are.
Santuli April 14, 2008, 10:14 PM

The voice and person inside the suit dont have to match...as long as Samus doesnt talk in her helmet-less scenes. Although if you do take a famous actor, someone else's voice might not work well...
