Star Fox 64 is one of the more memorable N64 games, and not just for its obvious qualities. Among many gamers, the game ranks up there with one of the best on-rails shooters ever made. The action is (usually) very fast-paced, with numerous ways to play the story (such as it is), and a cast of rather memorable characters. All in all, it is generally considered a significant improvement over the original Star Fox.

However, there's another quality that defines the title, Whereas the vast majority of Nintendo titles feature little or no voice acting, Star Fox 64 stands out as featuring almost total voice acting, that is, almost every line in the game is voice acted, much in the same vein as the Metal Gear Solid series. One of the first games to do so, Metal Gear Solid is renowned for featuring some of the best voice acting ever heard in a game. Voice actors like David Hayter (Solid Snake), Cam Clarke (Liquid Snake), and Jennifer Hale (Naomi Hunter) are considered among the best voice actors in the industry, even moving on to acclaim in other voice acting roles, particularly with the latter two.

Star Fox 64, on the other hand, is not renowned for particularly good voice acting, but what the voice actors lack in especially high-quality, they more than make up for it in the sheer memorability of their line reads. Many popular internet fads and memes, especially, but certainly not limited to, among Nintendo fans feature either the repetition or the parody of such lines.

The main character in Star Fox, Fox McCloud, is generally considered one of the better voice actors in the game, although he certainly is not above occasionally humorous lines. Fox has a rather high-pitched voice, which makes lines like "Aaaaaaahhhh!" funny in situations that not otherwise would be considered funny. As a general rule, Fox does not talk a lot in the game, leaving his teammates to come up with the most memorable lines.

Falco Lombardi, Fox's wingmate, is widely considered the best voice actor in the game. The creators deliberately gave him a very snarky attitude, and it'll show up a lot in the game. For example, in stages where a gameplay feature called All-Range mode, where Star Fox and their foes can fly in any direction at any time, Falco will often get pursued, and if Fox elects to save him (the Star Fox team, other than Fox, is completely incapable of either helping each other or themselves when Fox isn't around), Falco will yell "Gee, I've been saved by Fox, how swell!". However, he of course has rather silly lines, like whenever Fox fires on Falco's Arwing, he'll respond "Hey Einstein, I'm on your side!" or, when a boss will show up, he'll yell in his somewhat silly voice "Geez louise, WHAT is that?!" and "Crud! We were so close to Venom!" All in all, Falco is generally considered among the most popular members of the Star Fox team (helping to explain his appearance in the Smash Bros. series), so he is generally spared extensive mockery.

However, the same can't be said about Peppy Hare, the oldest member of team Star Fox. Early on the game, he'll start yelling out by the far the most memorable line from the game, "Do a Barrel Roll!" The ironic thing is that this, for the most part, very good advice. Generally, whenever Peppy yells this, the player will often face a large volley of fire from a wall of enemies in front of you. However, Peppy's rather extensive use of the line, using it in at least 5 different levels, gave rise to the mockery of this line. For most people, the humor in the line comes from not only how much the line is repeated verbatim in the game, but from the fact it just comes out very suddenly. The player will be flying into an enemy blockade, and Peppy will suddenly come in to yell the iconic line. Peppy's voice actor generally went for somewhat of an "old fogey" kind of delivery, justified, since Peppy is likely the oldest member of the team and was on the original Star Fox team with Fox's father, James McCloud, and Pigma Dengar, before the latter betrayed James and Peppy to Andross. Besides the barrel role line, Peppy is also known for constantly yelling "Never give up! Trust your instincts!" whenever Fox is put in an harrowing situation.

In the same vein as Peppy, though not nearly as well remembered, is Slippy Toad, seen by many as one of the most androgynous characters in Nintendo history. Slippy is the 'tech whiz" on the team, and as such, always is inventing new stuff for the team, including the Blue Marine (a submarine) and the Landmaster (a tank). The problem most people have with Slippy is that he has a very annoying voice and is a joke in combat situations, always getting caught in scripted ambushes and in All-Range mode situations, Slippy almost always gets chased by an enemy and is totally unable to free himself. Slippy is widely considered The Scrappy of the Star Fox series, that is, a character almost universally disliked, named after the incredibly unpopular Scrappy-Doo from the Scooby-Doo series. However, he is known for at least one memorable line, where remarks that the Arwing can handle temperatures "Up to 9000 degrees", bringing up in the minds of many players the famous internet meme 'It's over 9000!"

Of course, the villains are no exception to the rule of bad, yet classic voice acting. Of special note is the Star Wolf team. Every character from the rival of Star Fox, Wolf, Leon, Pigma, and Andrew, have lines that have survived the many years since Star Fox 64's release. Wolf is known for his rather comical "British" accent, uttering such lines like "Can't let you do that, Star Fox!" pronouncing "Star" like "Stah" and among the most famous (in an actually good way), "You're good, but I'm better!". Leon is known for such boisterous claims like "Annoying Bird! I am the great LEON!" and the rather calmly phrased "Andross has ordered us to take you down.".

Pigma also has come classic lines, including "I'm going to do you REEEEEEAL good", introducing some innuendo into the title for more aged players, and the quote he yells when he's taking fire from the Star Fox team, "You can't beat me! I've got a better ship!". Finally, Andrew is known for his exceptionally goofy voice acting, saying lines like "Andross' enemy is MY enemy!", "Stick to the pond, froggy!", and "Uncle Andross!", in a way of speaking that will likely make the player rather mad at him, and willing to shoot him down as soon as possible.

Finally, the main antagonist, Andross, similarly makes a comical impression to the average player. However, one of the most widely known lines he has is "Only I have the Brains to rule Lylat!". This quote was actually so well known that Masahiro Sakurai, director for the recently released Super Smash Bros Brawl, actually repeated this line in the update that talked about the Andross assist trophy (which used his rather primitive SNES incarnation as opposed to the monkey-like Andross seen in Star Fox 64. His appearance is also another point of mockery).

For many people, the draw to Star Fox 64 was not only in its exceptional gameplay, but also the sheer amount of comedy that can be drawn from the voice acting. While there are no doubt lines that were intended serious but came out in a humorous way, one could assume that the voice actors at some point knew their acting was a tad cheesy. However, the sheer memorability of the voice acting comes not from its quality, but how much it adds to an exceptional experience.

So, if you want to check out all the corny, cheesy, but iconic voice acting from the game, you owe it to yourself to break out that old N64, or download it from the Virtual Console, and be sure to do a...well, you know.

Very good article!  Makes me want to actually play the game.
Even so, there has been plenty of VA jokes across the internet.

When I used to play Star Fox, I didnt know english, so for the msot part (99.9% probably), i had no idea what they were saying. I still love the game because of its gameplay.

Still, I still realized much of what you said. The characteristics of each character (like Falco being a bit "snarky") or Slippy having a very annoying voice (my brother and I always wondered if Slippy was a 'he' or a 'she').

But the repetition of some of these lines made us remember some of them. Many had a kind of rhyme to them too. The way they were said, and repeated. We (bro and I) had no idea what they said, but we still loved teh voice acting nonetheless.

This game is one of my favorites. Undeniable classic, me thinks.

The japanese voices are about as cheesy as the US ones, sounding all 80's anime space opera like... so I really don't think it's accidental XD

When I recently played Lylatwars again I discovered that the lines where not epic (as I remembered) but cheesy. But they are always good for laughs. However Tim Higdon had a few wrong. It is: Daddy screamed REAAAAL good when he died (I remember that I found that a very harsh sentence back then), and: Go back to the pond, froggy.

And to think this: Even back then Slippy knew that Britney Spears would fall of her pedestal because he screams: You wanna piece of me?
